·    European Volunteer Centre (CEV) is looking for partners for the seminar on European Youth Volunteering Policy

The European Volunteer Centre (Centre Européen du Volontariat, CEV) is a European network of 40 national, regional and local Volunteer Centres across Europe, that together work to support and promote voluntary activity.

CEV is planning to organise a 4-day seminar on strategies to develop and promote youth volunteering policies across Europe in the framework of the YOUTH programme (Action 5 - support measures). This seminar will bring together representatives from volunteer centres, volunteer organisations, youth organisations, policy makers and volunteers from all over Europe to discuss ways forward to promote youth volunteering and volunteering within national youth policies. Particular stress will be put on the cooperation between EU member countries and South East Europe countries (Balkans) in order to exchange best practices in this field and to compare different traditions and experiences in youth volunteering.

Many CEV members have a strong record in advocating youth volunteering policy with their decision makers at regional or national level and this seminar aims at exchanging these practices and build capacities throughout Europe in this area to improve the efficiency of youth volunteer policies in Europe.

Questions to be addressed are:

  • Panorama of youth volunteering in different countries in Europe: What are barriers for young people to get involved in volunteering?
  • What are tools and best practices to promote youth volunteering? To overcome these barriers?
  • Panorama on policies and strategies to promote youth volunteering: What happens in the participating countries? What works?
  • How to set up a youth volunteering policy?
  • How to promote this policy with decision makers?
  • What recommendations can we make to European policy makers out of the experience of the participating countries?

The seminar is developed for 20-50 people and is expected to take place 8 to 12 March 2007. The conference place is still to be confirmed, but shall be either in the Balkan region (possibly in Skopje, Macedonia) or in Brussels to link it with visits to the European institutions.

As participants you can contribute with your own expertise in the field of youth volunteering in your country and could benefit and learn from the experiences of the other participants coming from all European countries. The idea is to compare efforts to strengthen youth volunteering in Europe and extract European recommendations from them. The discussions can help you when developing an own strategy to promote a youth volunteering policy with government in your countries.

Requirements:

  • Each organisation can send 2 participants;
  • 70% of travel costs to the event are reimbursed (on basis of cheapest fare tickets);
  • There will be a contribution to the participation of the seminar (150 EUR for organisations non CEV members or 250 EUR for two persons and 100 EUR for organisations from the Balkan region and CEV members or 150 EUR for two persons.

If you are interested to participate, please contact them at assistant@cev.be. Deadline to hand in the application is 1 June 2006, therefore they need the participation agreement at least by Fax by this date.

·International Work Camps, Summer 2006, FYRO Macedonia

An international work camp is a unique form of volunteer work that offers positive and practical ways of gathering people from different countries and different cultures. The volunteers live and work together on a project contributing to the local community and volunteer organization.

The aims of the work camps

Work camp help promoting tolerance, understanding, removing prejudices and stereotypes. The camps are created to support and encourage local initiatives that will continue after the camp has been held.

Life in a work camp

Work camps consist of a group of (usually young, usually international) volunteers working together on a project in a period of 2 to 4 weeks, e.g. building a children's adventure playground, painting a youth club, building a school in a village, renovating etc. this collective living and working experience brings about an awareness of people of various backgrounds, a contact with the local populace, and a feeling of concrete solidarity.

Work camps educate not only the participants, but also the local population, with whome the project is organized and who will continue the work started by the volunteers. Board and lodging are usually provided, but in most cases neither pocket money nor salaries are. Travel expenses to and from the work camps and normally covered by the volunteers themselves, who also have to pay an inscription fee to their sending organization.

Who can participate?

International work camps are open to people of 18 years and above. In general, they do not require any particular skills.
